Dr. Kevin Warrian, BA (Hons), BSc (Med), MD, MA, FRCS(C)

Dr. Kevin Warrian was born in Kelowna, British Columbia. He attended medical school at the University of Manitoba and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Ivey Eye Institute, Canada’s second oldest training program. He has completed a glaucoma clinical and research fellowship with Dr. George L. Spaeth at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, and he is a member of the International Spaeth Society of Fellows (ISSF).

Dr. Warrian moved to Calgary in 2012 to complete a two-year fellowship in medical and surgical retina at the University of Calgary. Following his Fellowship at the University of Calgary, he underwent additional training at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida over the summer of 2014. This focused on advanced anterior segment surgery, electrophysiology, hereditary retinal disease and ocular oncology.

Over the course of his career, he has been extensively involved in resident and medical student teaching. He has received faculty-wide teaching awards from the medical school at the University of Western Ontario and has been an invited speaker for the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). He has lectured for the University of Calgary and served as an oral examiner for their residency training program. Dr. Warrian has trained ophthalmology residents and vitreoretinal surgical fellows in surgical techniques and has served as an instructor for the University of Calgary’s Department of Surgery Microsurgical Skills Course.

Dr. Helen Chung, MD, FRCS(C)

Dr. Helen Chung was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She completed medical school with special training in research at the University of Alberta and finished her ophthalmology residency training here in Calgary. She practices general ophthalmology, with an interest in a wide variety of ophthalmic presentations, from anterior to posterior segment and beyond. She serves as the program director for the ophthalmology residency program here at the University of Calgary.

She has actively pursued research through her medical career, publishing in peer-reviewed journals and acting as a reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. She has presented her research at local, national, and international conferences, being awarded with research grants both for travel and project support. Some of her research interests include ocular trauma, refractive surgery, glaucoma, and neuro-ophthalmology.

Dr. Chung has a passion for global health and teaching. She has been on previous trips to Arusha, Tanzania to educate street children about HIV/AIDS; been involved in developing an electronic medical record system to implement in Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya; and traveled to Sri Lanka for an ophthalmology elective at General Teaching Hospital Kandy. She helps expand ophthalmic knowledge in Calgary by teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and technicians.

Creators and Design Team Leads

Dr. Michael Y.K. Mak, MD FRCSC

Michael (Mike) Mak is a Retina Fellow at McGill University. Originally from Hong Kong, he completed his undergraduate education in the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program at McMaster University and upon graduating, worked with Dr. Varun Chaudhary as a clinical research assistant. He then completed his medical degree from the University of Toronto and subsequently completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Calgary.

Mike is co-author on multiple scientific publications and grants, and has also won the Physician Mentorship and Teaching Award in 2020 for his residency education initiatives in ophthalmology. He created Ophtho Explorer to help improve ophthalmic education and resources for other residents in Canada and across the world.

Yejun Hong, MD Candidate 2022

Yejun is our star medical student at the University of Calgary. Prodigious, he completed his undergraduate degree in sciences early from the University of Alberta. He is instrumental in helping with the creation of Ophtho Explorer, especially in designing 3D printing projects such as the RASPI camera system and the 3D Frenzel goggles.

Yejun has also created over 200 hours of lecture material for iReview for other medical students. Without his help and dedication, we would not have been able to get our VR Magic Cataract simulation series as a recognized Canadian Ophthalmologic Society resource.

Randy Thompson, C.E.T

Randy Thompson is the owner of Affordable 3D here in Calgary, Alberta. He spent his early 20’s semi-professionally racing cars and after getting his certified engineering technologist degree, he started Affordable 3D.

He is instrumental in collaborating with us to design and print our 3D-printing projects.

Mohammad Shayyan Wasim, MD Candidate 2025

Shayyan is our star medical student from the University of Saskatchewan. Graduating with the highest average in psychology and French degree, he has led the design and construction of a 3D printed exophthalmometer for clinical use.

Inspired to increase accessibility of ophthalmological care, he is also currently playing a pivotal role in the development of the 3D printed eye model for scleral depression and indirect laser biomicroscopy training.

Jordan Huang, MD Candidate 2023

Jordan is our medical student at the University of Calgary. Completing his undergraduate education in the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program (Hons) at the University of Calgary, he has been involved in the creation of a new 3D printed device to shorten needles used in pneumatic retinopexy.

Jordan is one of the founding members of the International Vision Organization, a non-profit charity that aims to provide international eye care to those in need. His most recent medical mission trip was to Zimba, Zambia, where he performed Snellen visual acuity screening on over 600 schoolchildren. He has since published this data in the Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare. His most recent work with Dr. Ezekiel Weis has been awarded the Edwin Isaac Clarke Award for research excellence and potential.

Jaxon Huang, MD Candidate 2024

Jaxon is a medical student at the University of Hawaii and a current Research Fellow at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami.

He completed his undergraduate studies with a degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Calgary. He has been involved in multiple research projects and has presented at national conferences in Canada and the United States. He is currently helping with the development of a 3D device to control needle length in pneumatic retinopexy.
